Belgium, the biting cold

Belgium🇧🇪 is another country we’ve visited several times on various occasions, but each time only briefly; in practice, we can say that we’ve really only been to Brussels. Magda has been there several times, usually on business, whilst I’ve only been once; interestingly, what I remember most about that visit is an overwhelming feeling of cold. We’d just returned from the tropics, and at that very moment a cold snap had hit the Benelux countries in autumn, which seriously hampered our exploration of the Belgian capital.

The city centre caught our eye with its unique architecture, whilst the district housing the offices of international organisations struck us as almost too sterile. I much preferred the street where the shop windows were filled almost exclusively with comic books. We didn’t eat any chips, but the Belgian beer blew us away at the time – a real treat for the taste buds. Beer has never tasted quite the same since.

Belgium is a country that tempts you to explore it more deeply, but that’s more of a retirement thing – for leisurely savouring the local delicacies and visiting Bruges or Ghent. One day it will find its place in our itinerary.
