Urzecze – wild nature along the Vistula in southern Warsaw and Mazovia

Urzecze is one of the most valuable natural sections of the Vistula River valley in Mazovia, and it is on this stretch, just south of Warsaw, that many of our guided nature cruises take place. The river here remains largely unregulated, with a dynamic landscape of sandbanks, islands, backwaters and riparian vegetation. This makes Urzecze one of the best places to see the Vistula as a living ecosystem, not just an urban backdrop.

The most important natural sites are the Zawadowskie Islands and Morysin, where quiet, wet and hard-to-reach habitats support a wide range of birdlife and small animals. These are areas where you can observe rare birds associated with sandy shores and open river landscapes, including terns, gulls, waders and shorebirds, as well as other species that depend on the natural rhythm of the Vistula. This makes Urzecze an excellent spot for birdwatching, and the easiest and most comfortable way to enjoy it is from the deck of a boat during a guided nature cruise. The river valley also hosts mammals such as the beaver, otter, roe deer, fox and, in some places, wild boar.

Urzecze also has a strong cultural and ethnographic dimension. For centuries, people settled along the riverbanks, adapting their lives to the river’s rhythms, seasonal floods and wet terrain. This relationship created a distinctive river culture, visible in local traditions, economic practices and traditional wooden architecture. Dutch settlers, known as Olendrzy, played an important role here, introducing practical water management systems that allowed people to live on floodplains and leaving a lasting mark on the region’s landscape.

A cruise along the Vistula in Urzecze offers the best perspective to experience this area — from the river itself. It is one of the most authentic places near Warsaw where nature and history meet in a very direct and meaningful way.
